Updated: Jan 7, 2022

With so much complexity and change in the healthcare industry, communicating effectively with rating agencies and investors has never been more important. Knowing how to tell your story, what to share, and how to prepare are perennial challenges for management. At the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s (HFMA) Annual Conference, provider representatives, financial advisors, and former rating agency executives shared practical advice to improve investor outreach programs, prepare for rating agency and investor meetings, and enhance capital market access.

The panel included:

  • Liz Sweeney, President of Nutshell Associates and Board Member, University of Maryland Medical System

  • Ric Magnuson, Executive Vice President and CFO, Allina Health System, and

  • Vasanta Pundarika, Co-Head of Healthcare Investment Banking at Matrix Capital Markets Group, Inc.

Panel members discussed what to expect in meetings with rating agencies and investors, how to tailor presentations and disclosure materials to meet their needs, identifying which credit factors are most impactful, and how leadership teams can prepare for questions on "hot button" issues such as ESG, COVID-19 response, and cyber risk, as well as unique situations such as operational turnarounds, M&A, and transformational capital programs.
